I’m standing next to Charlotte on a low stone bridge, in the village of Bourton-on-the-Water. A tiny steam is trickling beneath us. The water sparkles in the early evening sun. I’m wishing I had a ring in my pocket, so I could propose to my girlfriend and best friend. That would have been perfect.
We’ve had such a lovely time, going for a countryside walk, followed by a three-course meal in a local restaurant. Then we strolled around the village, in the fading sunlight, listening to the noisy chatting outside the pubs, and watching the ducks chilling out in their pond.
Charlotte is smiling, looking up at the evening sky above the village. I take her hand in mine, and she looks into my eyes.
“Hey,” I say.
“Hey yourself,” she says, still smiling.
“I love you,” I say, holding both her hands in mine, and smiling back at her.
“I’m very glad!” she says. “And I love you…”
I interrupt her with a kiss. “Always and forever,” I think to myself, as we continue to kiss. “You’re so beautiful…”
Afterwards, Charlotte tells me that she’s had enough glasses of wine with our dinner, and would rather skip the pub and wander back to our hotel instead. We walk hand in hand, savouring our time together.
And here, in the present day, a tear falls down my cheek as I remember how it felt to be in love with Charlotte. The wonderful times we shared. It makes me feel upset. Happy memories are always bittersweet now.
But at least I will always know what it felt like to be with a perfect partner, best friend, lover and soulmate. Those memories, and our love, will live on inside this butterfly garden.
